Grandma Theda's Bread and Butter Pickles
My cucumbers were a little small so I ended up with barely enough to fill the jars, even with all the liquid.
1 dozen medium cucumbers
10 onions (I don't know why so many)
sprinkle with salt and pepper and let stand 1 hour, then drain.
Add 1 quart vinegar, 2 cups sugar, 2 tsp celery seed, 1 tsp mustard seed, 2 green peppers (sliced), 1 tsp turmeric.
Boil 15-20 min and put in bottles and seal
*Those are all of Grandma's instructions, so again, I'll say, you need a huge pot. And I didn't sprinkle the veggies with salt and let drain first, just combined it all in a pot, brought it to a boil, and boiled for 15 minutes, and put in jars and seal. But I did also process them for 10 minutes just to hopefully assure a seal. I was a little wary. I added in some garlic and chili powder too. Next time I'll add a red bell pepper because it could use a little color. I left the vegetables in bigger strips or chunks or slices for this. I think they are mainly meant to put out by themselves as an appetizer before Thanksgiving dinner for example, so you'd want pieces you could pick up.
